Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the safety, efficacy and wound stretch of the new delivery system.

Setting:

Isala Clinics, Zwolle , Netherlands

Methods:

A widely known D cartridge is mostly used to inject hydrophobic acrylic IOL's with a wound assisted technique through 2.2-2.4 mm incisions. The wound stretch through these incision sizes has been shown to be limited and is widely accepted. The main innovative features of the new cartridge system are 1) dedicated depth guard behind the cartridge tip, ensuring a fixed and controlled entry of the tip into the corneal incision. 2) a single hand push injection mechanism which allows an uninterrupted IOL delivery.

Results:

All IOL injections were successful. Wound stretch in the pig eye model was smaller than the current double hand screw type device.

Conclusions:

This innovative preloaded hydrophobic iol injection delivery system looks very promising with regards to safety and limitation of incision stretch.
