Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the impact on vision after Phacoemulsification and implantation of an aspheric intraocular Lens compared to a spherical IOL.

Setting:

Prospective, randomized and controlled study of 255 eyes with two IOL models: Aspheric and Spherical Monofocal IOL. Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital

Methods:

Post operative BCVA and CS with aberrometer were measured via Modular Transfer Function Tests. Follow up was carried out for 21 days and these data were calculated as mean differences and p value < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. BCVA, objective CS test under mesopic and photopic conditions by modular transfer function test and Subjective Perception of VA.

Results:

89 % of the patients with aspherical IOLs and 87 % of patient with spherical IOLs achieved best visual acuity of better than 20/30. CS was better for eyes implanted with Aspherical IOL as measured by the Modular Transfer Function. Statistically significant differences were found at 5, 10, and 15cpd under mesopic conditions between the two IOL groups. Photopic CS was similar in both groups. Statistical significance was also found for the Strehl Ratio between the Aspherical and spherical group.

Conclusions:

Compared to a spherical monofocal lenses, the aspheric design of the monofocal IOLs reduces spherical aberration and improves mesopic contrast sensitivity and strehl ratio at higher frequencies. The use of aspheric IOLs improves the optical quality of the eye. High-contrast photopic BCVA was similar between both IOLs.
