Abstract Details

Purpose:

The present study compared the Higher Order Aberrations (HOA), contrast sensitivity, and visual acuity in subjects implanted with Aspheric and Spheric IOLs post uneventful phacoemulsifation cataract surgery.

Setting:

The study was conducted in Laxmi Eye Institute, Panvel, Maharashtra state, India.

Methods:

It is a prospective cohort study of 56 eyes in the Spheric and Aspheric IOL groups. We evaluated the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity, and total HOA at three visits (one, three, and six months post surgery). We used the t-test and Wilcoxon–Mann–Whitney test for comparison between the groups.

Results:

In undilated state, no significant differences in total HOA were seen between these groups at one and three months. The total HOA (median [Interquartile range]) was significantly higher in Spheric than Aspheric group at six months (0.089 [0.045-0.377] vs 0.060 [0.045-0.123]; p=0.02). In dilated state, total HOA was significantly higher in Spheric than Aspheric group at one (0.321 [0.200-0.770] vs 0.060 [0.040-0.330]; p<0.01), three (0.304 [0.170-0.690] vs 0.060 [0.040-0.330]; p<0.01), and six months (0.300 [0.210-0.780] vs 0.060 [0.045-0.332]; p<0.01). There was weak correlation between contrast sensitivity and HOA at one (r=-0.07, p=0.39), three (r=-0.10, p=0.26), and six months (r=0.05, p=0.50).

Conclusions:

BCVA was similar in both groups. Aspheric IOLs did not demonstrate better contrast sensitivity and the total HOAs were significantly higher in the Spheric group. There was a weak correlation between contrast sensitivity and HOA at all visits.
