Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate long-term effect of the surface light scattering of hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs) and to discuss the clinical importance of these findings.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Ilsan Paik Hospital, Inje University, Korea

Methods:

One hundred sixty eyes of 96 patients who had undergone implantation of a hydrophobic acrylic, IOL were enrolled in this study. Patients were divided into two groups according to manufacturer: Acrysof IOLs (MA60BM, SA60AT, SN60WF, Alcon, Inc.) and AMO IOLs (AR40e, ZA9003, ZCB00, Abbot Medical Optics, Inc.). The surface light scattering was measured with area densitometry using a scheimpflug camera. Internal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were measured using a Wavefront analyzer.

Results:

The anterior and posterior surface light scattering in the Acrysof IOLs continued to increase up to 10 years postoperatively (r = 0.870, p < 0.001 and r = 0.855, p < 0.001). The intensity of the anterior and posterior surface light scattering in the Acrysof IOLs was significantly greater than that in the AMO IOLs (p < 0.05), except for the intensity of the posterior surface light scattering during the period of 1 to 2 years after cataract surgery. Total HOAs and spherical-like HOAs in the Acrysof IOLs was statistically higher than AMO IOLs during the period of more than 7 years after cataract surgery.

Conclusions:

The surface light scattering of Acrysof hydrophobic acrylic IOLs is higher than that of AMO IOLs. In case of secondary cataract in Acrysof IOLs, it may be worth considering laser posterior capsulotomy earlier than in the standard case.
