Intrastromal corneal ring segment Implantation (Kera Ring355º) in patients with pellucid marginal corneal degeneration: 6-12 months follow-up data

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the outcomes after the implantation of Keraring 355º intrastromal corneal ring (ICR; Mediphacos, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) aided by PocketMaker microkeratome(DIOPTEX GmbH, Austria )for the treatment of pellucid marginal degeneration.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Bina Eye Hospital Research center, Tehran, Iran

Methods:

This study included 11 eyes of 11 patients (mean age, 35 ± 8.65 years) with pellucid marginal degeneration who underwent ICR implantation (Keraring355°) using mechanical dissection with the PocketMaker microkeratome. The main outcomes measures included: Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction and keratometry readings. The mean postoperative follow-up was 10 months (range 6-12 months).

Results:

At the 6-12 month follow-up visit, there was a statistically significant reduction in the mean spherical equivalent refractive error (-0.52 ± 1.53 D postoperative versus -3.46± 1.36 D preoperative, p=0.001).The mean UDVA (logMAR) improved from 0.85± 0.25 preoperatively to 0.25± 0.15 postoperatively (p=0.001), while mean CDVA (logMAR) improved from 0.45 ± 0.13 to 0.18± 0.13, p=0.001). The mean sphere and cylinder of manifest refraction decreased significantly by 2 and 2.5.00 diopter (D) respectively (p< 0.001).Additionally, the mean K reading decreased by 5.75 D (from 47.29 D to 41.54 D, p=0.001). The majority of patients were satisfied with Keraring 355º implant. No intraoperative and postoperative complications were demonstrated in this series of patients.

Conclusions:

The outcomes of this study show that the ICRS (KeraRing 355º) implantation using PocketMaker microkeratome appears to provide an effective method for treating pellucid marginal degeneration.
