Abstract Details
Purpose:
To explore effectiveness of the ophthalmic medicinal films with moxifloxacin in prevention of infection complications in ophthalmic surgery.
Setting:
Eye Diseases Department, The Bashkir State Medical University, The Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia
Methods:
The research involved 51 patients (51 eyes) with immature age-related cataract and glaucoma. The first group of patients (34 eyes) were put to the conjunctival cavities the ophthalmic medicinal films with moxifloxacin 20 hours prior to the operation. In the second group of patients (17 eyes) used instillation 0,5% moxifloxacin solution 4 times a day. At the beginning operation after of processing the surgical field collected aqueous humor. The antibiotic concentration in the aqueous humor was measured by spectrophotometric method (Spectrophotometer “Specord M 40”).
Results:
The first group of patients was well tolerated the ophthalmic medicinal films with moxifloxacin, lack irritation of the anterior segment of the eye. By the operation time the ophthalmic medicinal film had completely dissolved in the conjunctival sack. Moxifloxacin concentration in the aqueous humor constituted 7,61±0,05 mkg/ml when applying ophthalmic medicated film, which is 2,5 times higher than the average therapeutic concentration (3,0 mkg/ml). With instillations, the antibiotic concentration in the aqueous humor was 1,58±0.01 mkg/ml, which is slightly higher than the minimal suppressing concentration.
Conclusions:
Ophthalmic medicinal film with moxifloxacin was well tolerated by patients. They have proven to make and support a constant therapeutic concentration of antibiotics in the aqueous humor of the eye within 24 hours. The use of ophthalmic medicinal film with moxifloxacin is an effective method prophylaxis of infection inflammatory complications in ophthalmic surgery.
