Abstract Details
Purpose:
To present the success rate with regards to intraocular pressure reduction in glaucoma patients that had express valve implantations.
Setting:
The express valve is a medical shunt that is used in the treatment of glaucoma patients with the aim of lowering intraocular pressure in the eye.
Ocumed Eye and Laser Institute in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa.
Methods:
Data from 87 eyes that underwent express valve surgery during 2009-2015 were used in this ongoing study. Eyes were pre-operatively examined and post-operative intervals included, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year. Intraocular pressure was measured and medications prescribed were noted. Data was analyzed to determine whether or not the intraocular pressure were ≤ 18mmHg, deemed a success. Should glaucoma medication be taken in addition to the surgery, to achieve an IOP of ≤ 18 mmHg it were deemed a qualified success. An IOP ≥ 19mmHg were classified as a failure.
Results:
Patient data with regards to IOP and medications were noted, analyzed and results are reported and compared.
Conclusions:
After 4-8 weeks 53% of eyes had an IOP ≤ 18mmHg without using glaucoma medication, which deemed them successes. 27% of eyes were defined as qualified successes having an IOP ≤ 18mmHg and using additional glaucoma medication. The remainder of the eyes were deemed failures, having an IOP ≥ 19mmHg. Most eyes showed a continuous reduction in IOP over time with 56% of all eyes classified as successes, 29% classified as qualified successes and the remainder classified as failures at a one year interval.
