Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report the comparison of 2 types of toric multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) implanted for refractive lens exchange (RLE) or cataract.
Setting:
Retina Total Eye Care, Driebergen, Holland
Methods:
Prospective non-randomized comparative study of all eyes implanted with a multifocal toric IOL during 2014. In 27 eyes a trifocal toric (TT) IOLs (Zeiss, AT LISA tri toric 939MP) and 28 eyes a bifocal toric (RT) IOLs (Alcon, SND1TT) were implanted for cataract or RLE at 3 months. The outcome parameters are refraction, visual acuity at different distances, refractive cylinder, spherical equivalent, and comparison of defocus curves.
Results:
In the TT group UCDA was logMAR -0.01 + 0.11 at 3 months, and in the RT group -0.04 + 0.07 (p<0.24). Post-operative spherical equivalent was plano + 0.40, and +0.03D + 0.20, respectively (p<0.76). Mean refractive cylinder was -0.28D + 0.35 in the trifocal group, and -0.21D + 0.40 in the bifocal group (p<0.53). Intermediate vision was better between -0.5 to -1.5 D in the defocus curves, in favor of the trifocal IOL. There was a bias toward more females, more RLE, and higher cylinders to be corrected in the trifocal group. No significant lens rotation was found.
Conclusions:
Both toric multifocal IOLs perform well and reduce ametropia for distance and near in the expected manner. The mean cylinder was reduced equally in both groups. Due to differences in available cylindrical correction, and patient preference, there was a bias toward higher cylinders to be corrected in the trifocal toric group. The trifocally implanted group had better unaided visual acuity between -1.D and -1.5D on the defocus curve.
