Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the visual function by means of the defocus curve and the intraocular aberrometric profile in eyes undergoing cataract surgery with implantation of a diffractive trifocal intraocular lens(IOL).
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology (OFTALMAR), Vithas Medimar International Hospital, Alicante, Spain
Methods:
A total of 31 eyes of 16 patients with ages ranging between 48 and 76 years old and undergoing phacoemulsification cataract surgery with implantation of the trifocal diffractive IOL FineVision (Physiol) were enrolled in the study. The outcome of surgery was evaluated at 3 months after surgery by analyzing the visual function by means of the defocus curve, manifest refraction, and the intraocular aberrometry (iTrace system).
Results:
LogMAR corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) improved significantly with surgery (0.17±0.27 vs. 0.03±0.07, p=0.01). Mean logMAR uncorrected near visual acuity was 0.14±0.10. The postoperative spherical equivalent was within ±0.50 and ±1.00 D in 83.9% and 100%, respectively. The analysis of the defocus curve showed mean logMAR visual acuity levels of 0.22±0.09, 0.17±0.07, 0.13±0.07, and 0.05±0.13 for the defocus of -3.00, -2.00, -1.00 and 0.00 D, respectively. Mean postoperative intraocular primary coma and spherical aberration were 0.33±0.39 µm and 0.00±0.21 µm, respectively. No correlation was found between postoperative CDVA and higher order aberrations (r=0.10, p>0.05).
Conclusions:
The trifocal diffractive IOL Fine Vision provides an effective restoration of the visual function, with functional levels of distance, near and intermediate visual acuity, and no significant degradation of intraocular optics.
