Purpose:
To evaluate the visual and refractive outcomes after implantation of a trifocal intraocular lens (IOL), considering distance, near and intermediate vision, Contrast Sensitivity, Defocus curves and quality of vision.

BMI Southend Private Hospital,UK
Methods:
This study comprised 50 patients who had bilateral implantation of the AT LISA Trifocal IOL. Patients were assessed at 3-6 months post operatively. The main outcome measures were Uncorrected (UDVA) and Best Corrected Distance Visual Acuity (BCDVA) measured in logMAR. Near visual acuity (NVA) and Intermediate visual acuity (IVA) were measured in LogMAR at 40 and 70cms respectively. The Radner reading charts were used to measure reading speed. A quality of vision questionnaire was used to assess patient satisfaction and dysphotopsia was recorded using the Zeiss Glare Simulator.
Results:
50 patients (100 eyes) were included in the study, having undergone phacoemulsification for either cataract or refractive lens exchange. No patient had any post-operative complications and all had post-operative astigmatism <1.00DC. Mean Spherical Equivalent was +0.34D. At 6 months, mean values of 0.06±0.06 and -0.02±0.06 LogMAR were obtained for monocular UDVA and BCDVA, respectively. Mean values of 0.14±0.07, 0.12±0.05 and 0.16±0.07 LogRAD were obtained for binocular UNVA, CNVA and CIVA, respectively. Patient satisfaction scores were high and when compared to dysphotopsia scoring with the Zeiss Glare Simulator and no direct correlation was found.
Conclusions:
The AT LISA 839M Trifocal provides excellent multifocality and high levels of patient satisfaction.
