Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose was to evaluate the correlation between symptoms and different clinical signs in patients with dry eye.

Setting:

Methods:

For measurement of symptoms, the Ocular Surface Index (OSDI). Clinical parameters included assessment of tear film thickness (TFT), which was measured using a custom-built optical coherence tomography (OCT), further tear break up time (BUT), corneal fluorescein staining and tear osmolarity. Correlation coefficients were calculated using linear regression analysis.

Results:

The mean OSDI in this study population was 28.9+/-17.6, the mean TFT was 4.1+/-1.3 micrometers. A significant negative correlation was found between OSDI and TFT (r=-0.34, P=0.01). Tear film thickness (TFT) correlated positively with BUT, but with no other signs of DES.

Conclusions:

Tear film thickness as measured with a custom-built OCT device correlated with subjective symptoms in patients with mild to moderate dry-eye syndrome. Assessment of TFT with OCT may become a valuable tool in the support of DES patients.
