Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the safety and efficacy of using topical keratolac 0.4% drops vs topical prednisolone vs a combination therapy of both drugs in the prevention and management of acute pseudophakic cystoid macular oedema (CME).
Setting:
Ophthalmology Department, Egypt Air Hospital, Cairo,Egypt.
Methods:
Randomized prospective non masked open label trial including 120 patients randomly distributed into 3 groups, the first group received topical keratolac 0.4% ,the second received prednisolone acetate 1% suspension drops, the third group received a combination therapy of both drugs. Treatments were continued for 4 weeks postoperatively. Patients' assessment included Snellen visual acuity, IOP, OCT scanning of the macula at day 1 and 4,8,12 weeks.
Results:
Results showed that 57.5% of the Prdnisolone 1% montherapy group developed CME and increase in CMT at 1 month duration(P=.035) compared to 17,5% of the keratolac 0.4% group and 2.5% of the combined therapy group.(P=.001).
Conclusions:
Combined topical NSAID and steroids showed superior efficacy in the prophylaxis and management of pseudophakic macular oedema compared to either drug monotherapy.
