Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the incidence of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) of two hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs) with C-loop haptics and discontinuous sharp optic edges 1.5 years post-operatively. The IOLs compared were the Zaraccom Focusforce® Aspheric AS60125 and the Alcon AcrySof® SA60AT.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Vienna, Austria

Methods:

This prospective, randomized study comprised 162 eyes of 81 patients. Each patient received a Focusforce AS60125 lens in one eye and an AcrySof SA60AT lens in the other eye. Retroillumination pictures were taken 6 months and 1.5 years postoperatively. The AQUA-Software was used to quantitatively assess the extent of PCO. Further data, such as centration of the lens, anterior and posterior optic-capsule distance, anterior fibrosis and buttonholing, was collected using slit-lamp examination.

Results:

The mean AQUA PCO score (scale: 1-10) was relatively low for both IOLs: 0,52 ± 0,89 for the Acrysof lens and 1,00 ± 1,25 for the Focusforce lens (p=0.002). The Acrysof lens had a statistically significant higher incidence of glistenings. The Zaraccom lens showed a lower amount on anterior fibrosis.

Conclusions:

Both hydrophobic acrylic lenses with sharp optic edges showed a beneficial effect regarding PCO development within this study. 1.5 years postoperatively the PCO intensity was low.
