Purpose:
To report my commercial experience with Raindrop Near Vision Inlay for the treatment of presbyopia and to compare retrospectively with my monovision LASIK (MonoLasik) patients.
Setting:
Lasikcentrum Oogkliniek , Boxtel, The Netherlands.
Methods:
Sixteen (n=16) patients were implanted with the Raindrop Inlay after creating a corneal flap of 150 microns with IntraLase femtosecond laser. Concurrent laser ablation was performed on 10 patients with a targeted refraction of +0.75 D in the inlay eye. Fifteen (n=15) previously treated MonoLasik patients were selected as a comparative group. MonoLasik treatment was targeted for non-dominant eye between -0.75 D to -1.50 D. Visual acuities for far and near, patient satisfaction, stereopsis and spectacle independence were measured.
Results:
All Raindrop patients achieved binocular uncorrected distance of 1.0 or better compared to 93% for MonoLasik. 87% of the Raindrop and 53% of the MonoLasik patients achieve binocular uncorrected near 1.0 or better. Monocularly in the treated eye, UDVA was better in the Raindrop group with 74% achieving 0.6 or better compared to 40% in the MonoLasik group. Raindrop group exhibited better stereopsis (Raindrop: 98 secs vs. MonoLasik: 286 secs) and spectacle independence for near (Raindrop: 86% vs. MonoLasik: 80% never or rarely needing readers).
Conclusions:
In my experience, the Raindrop Inlay provides better binocular near vision improvement compared to MonoLasik, with less monocular distance vision impairment and better stereopsis.
Raindrop is a viable commercial product for the correction of presbyopia in my practice.
