Abstract Details

Purpose:

Presentation of a presbyopic eye correction by the Light Sword Lens (LSL) being a novel refractive element with an angular modulation of the optical power.

Setting:

Military Institute of Medicine in Warsaw and Faculty of Physics, Warsaw University of Technology , Poland

Methods:

14 presbyopic patients have taken part in subjective tests of visual acuity. Any refractive error of the eye was corrected by proper optometric lenses. Later 8mm circular iris was inserted (REF task), then refilled by the LSL. Both these elements were placed 5 mm in front of the corneal apex. The observers were asked to read EDTRS charts located at distances equal to defocus from 3D till 0D with a step of 0.5D. The last line (in VA scale) with at least 3 properly recognized optotypes was a result. Then average result was calculated for each defocus value.

Results:

Expected result was to obtain good VA in a wide range of defocus connected with EDOF imaging feature of LSL. Indeed, while the VA for REF tasks decreases from 1.2 at distance to 0.4 for near, for LS tasks the obtained results indicate normal vision for distance and acceptable VA for near. Therefore the LSL enables a good quality of vision in all functional distances.

Conclusions:

Subjective measurements performed for presbyopic patients equipped with the LSL turned out better VA than in the reference case as well as when the pinhole pupil was used instead of the LSL. The presented correction could be a real breakthrough in presbyopia compensation and in intraocular designs.
