Purpose:
To report safety and efficacy of a refractive corneal inlay for presbyopia .
Setting:
Federal University of Sao Paulo-UNIFESP
Methods:
Corneal Inlays (Presbia Flexivue Microlens™, Presbia Coöperatief U.A., Netherlands) were implanted in the non-dominant eye of 31 emmetropic presbyopic patients (0.75 SE 1.00SE) after the creation of a 300 microns depth stromal pocket using a femtosecond laser.Patients were followed according to a clinical protocol,and include collection of visual acuity data, including refraction, anterior segment imaging analysis(Oculyzer,Alcon) and wavefront evaluation (Nidek OPD Scan).
Results:
The mean age of patients in the population is 50,07 years (range 45 to 60 years); 70% of the study population is female, and 30% is male. The mean UNVA improved to J 1 in 82,6% of eyes treated with the inlay. All eyes improved four lines in all visits. Patients reported near vision to be good or excellent in 86,4%. Two patients were explanted due to blurred vision for distance and near. One patient developed a superficial corneal ulcer after 20 months. Two patients underwent cataract removal .One patient underwent inlay exchange to increase near power correction.
Conclusions:
The Presbia Flexivue Microlens™ provided patients with an effective treatment for the correction of presbyopia by providing an improvement in near vision. Manageable complications may occur in the long term follow up.
