Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the subjective and objective visual results after Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) with a trifocal diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) in post-LASIK patients, who are looking for a solution for their presbyopia.

Setting:

Brussels Eye Doctors ,12-16 Boulevard St-Michel, 1150 Brussels (Woluwé St-Pierre), Belgium.

Methods:

In 49 eyes that had undergone LASIK surgery in the past (approximately 80% of whom for myopia or myopic astigmatism) an RLE with a trifocal diffractive IOL was performed. IOL calculation was performed using the historical method and/or the ASCRS calculator. The patient's mean age at the time of surgery was 55 years. The visual acuity (distance and near) and refraction was assessed at 1 month and 6 months postoperatively. In addition to the standard clinical follow-up, a questionnaire evaluating the patient satisfaction and quality of life was also submitted to the patients.

Results:

The mean preoperative spherical equivalent was -0.25 +/- 1.72D (range -5.88 to +2.5D). Postoperatively at 1 month and 6 months the mean preoperative spherical equivalent was -0.18+/- 0.54D (range -1.63 to +0.88D) and 0.01 +/- 0.22D (range -0.50 to +0.63D). Refractive outcome of +/-0.5D was achieved at 1 month by 80%, at 6 months by 95%. 85% of patients were able to read Parinaud 1 without correction. The safety was high: at 1 month 4% of patients had lost 2 lines, at 6 months no patients had lost 2 lines or more. Patient satisfaction was high.

Conclusions:

RLE with implantation of a trifocal diffractive IOL in post-LASIK patients achieves a good refractive outcome, good visual results and high patient satisfaction.
