Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate Sociodemographic factors responsible for vision impairment and blindness among diabetic patients in Beni-Suef Governorate.
Setting:
The study was conducted on 200(two hundred) patients of Beni-Suef University Hospital outpatient clinic, Egypt.
Methods:
Patients selected were diabetics an legally blind(visual acuity ≤ 6/60),all patients were asked to answer a specially designed questionnaire ,
Results:
Knowledge about consequences of diabetes on the eye was low (31%),patients received laser treatment were more aware about consequences of diabetes(p≤0.02),as level of education increases patient knowledge about ocular complications of diabetes increases(p≤0.001),patient knowledge about complications of diabetes from internists and media was low while from ophthalmologists was greater(p≤0.02).
Conclusions:
A greater role of media and internists is recommended in informing diabetics about complications of diabetes and importance of regular follow-up, long term reduction of ocular complications of diabetes may be fulfilled by increasing level of education.
