Purpose:
Investigation and estimation of tear secretion, ocular surface disease index (OSDI), tear film stability after SMILE operation for myopia and myopic astigmatism correction.
Setting:
IRTC Eye Microsurgery Ekaterinburg Center, Ekaterinburg, Russia.
Methods:
The group included 18 patients (36 eyes) without initial signs of dry eye syndrome in whom SMILE operation was performed.
Ocular surface disease index, invasive time of tear film rupture, Shirmer's test were defined before SMILE operation, at day 1, and in 1 and 3 months after SMILE.
Results:
OSDI before SMILE was 4.93 ± 3.76, at day 1 after the operation it increased to 7.91 ± 4.86; 1 month after the operation - 3.97 ± 2.22; by 3 months - 2.57 ± 1.04.
Invasive time of tear film rupture before SMILE was 11.72 ± 3.41 sec, postoperatively it did not significantly differ from preoperative values.
Shirmer's test: before SMILE 21.06 ± 12.12 mm, at day 1 after SMILE - 24.56 ± 10.93 mm, by 1 and 3 months after SMILE there was a statistically significant increase up to 25.5 ± 12.14 mm and 26.86 ± 11.84 mm respectively.
Conclusions:
SMILE operation does not cause dry eye syndrome development in patients who did not have dry eye initially.
