Purpose:
Report the visual and refractive outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for myopia using the VisuMax femtosecond laser (Carl Zeiss Meditec).
Setting:
Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, Kathmandu, Nepal.
Methods:
This was a retrospective analysis of all myopic SMILE procedures treated consecutively between January 2012 and July 2014 at Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, Kathmandu, Nepal. Inclusion criteria were preoperative spherical equivalent refraction (SEQ) up to -10.00 D and CDVA 20/20 or better. Outcomes analysis was performed for all eyes with 3 month follow-up according to the Standard Graphs for Reporting Refractive Surgery.
Results:
Three month data were available for 1,396 eyes (81%) of 732 patients. Mean attempted SEQ was -5.78±1.81D (-0.96 to -10.00D), and mean cylinder was -0.79±0.69D (0.00 to -5.25D). Postoperatively, mean SEQ relative to target was -0.28±0.29D (-1.31 to +1.50D), with ±0.50D in 80% and ±1.00D in 99% of eyes. UDVA was 20/20 or better in 95% and 20/25 or better in 99% of eyes. One line CDVA was lost in 2%, and no eyes lost two or more lines. Contrast sensitivity was not changed for any of 5 frequencies measured.
Conclusions:
SMILE for myopia up to -10.00 was found to be safe and effective with outcomes similar to those previously reported for LASIK.
