Comparative visual performance between the the Symfony IOL and the Zeiss AT Lisa Trifocal: a review of 200 eyes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine and compare visual performance at 3 months of an Extended Range of Vision IOL (Symfony) and a Diffractive Trifocal IOL (Zeiss AT Lisa).

Setting:

Optimax and Ultralase Eye Clinics UK

Methods:

Following Refractive Lens Exchange 100 eyes of 50 patients were consecutively implanted with the Symfony Extended Range of Vision IOL and 100 eyes of 50 consecutive patients implanted with the Zeiss AT Lisa Trifocal IOL. They were examined at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months. Distance monocular and binocular UCVA and Near monocular and binocular UCVA were measured and compared. Patient satisfaction rates were also measured.

Results:

The Symfony group had 30 females and 20 males with an average age of 56 +/- 6.9 years. The At Lisa group had 28 females and 22 males with an average age of 58+/- 7.4 years. At 3 months the Symfony Group achieved 0.1 LogMar (20/25) or better in 98.7% of patients for distance UCVA and N8/J4 or better in 91% of patients for near UCVA. In The AT Lisa Group 0.1 LogMar (20/25) or better was achieved in 93.5% of patients and 97% of patients achieved N8/J4 or better. 96 % of patients in the Symfony group rated their results as worthwhile or better compared to 98% in the Zeiss At Lisa group.

Conclusions:

Both these IOLs produced excellent results with highly satisfied patients. The Zeiss AT Lisa group achieved marginally better levels of uncorrected near visual acuity while the Symfony produced better distance uncorrected visual acuity results. Disabling glare and haloes was reported in 1 patient in the AT Lisa group but none in the Symfony group.
