Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual outcomes, quality of vision and spectacle independence after the implantation of a new extended range of vision intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

Lusíadas Education and Research Center, Lisboa, Portugal. Cruz Vermelha Hospital, Lisboa, Portugal.

Methods:

This prospective study included 60 eyes of 30 patients who underwent cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of the new presbyopia-correcting extended range of vision IOL (Tecnis Symfony, model ZXR00, Abbott Medical Optics, Inc.). Over a 3-month follow-up period, the main outcome measures were uncorrected and corrected monocular and binocular distance (UDVA and DCVA respectively), intermediate 80 cm (UIVA and DCIVA respectively) and near at 40 cm (UNVA and DCNVA respectively) visual acuities (VA), spherical equivalent (SE) refraction, defocus curves, glare and no-glare contrast sensitivity (CSV-1000, VectorVision), presence of photic phenomena and use of glasses.

Results:

Preliminary results of 30 eyes that completed the 3-month follow-up showed a mean monocular UDVA of -0.01 ± 0.10 LogMAR, mean binocular UIVA of -0.33 ± 0.06 LogMAR and mean binocular UNVA of 0.12 ± 0.11 LogMAR. Refractive predictability was excellent, with an mean SE refraction -0.15 ± 0.33 diopters. Contrast sensitivity was similar to published data for a normal population of similar age. 5% of patients complained of mild halos and no patient complained of glare or starbursts. 82% of the patients were completely spectacle independent, with 18% needing glasses for near.

Conclusions:

The implantation of the Tecnis Symfony IOL provided excellent distance and intermediate VAs and very good near VA. Both predictability of refractive results and optical performance were excellent, providing patients in this series with very high levels of spectacle independence.
