Purpose:
To study depth of focus, reading capability and subjective satisfaction after bilateral implantation of Extended Range of Vision IOL (Symphony, AMO).
Setting:
Private Eye Clinic in Haugesund, Norway
Methods:
Retrospective study of the first 100 Symphony IOL`s implanted bilaterally at our clinic. Refractive goal was emmetropia in the dominant eye and -0.5 D in the non-dominant eye.
Main study parameters were monocular and binocular uncorrected visual acuity at near, intermediate and at distance. Rest-refractive errors and best-corrected visual acuity were also tabulated to establish the precision and safety of this lens. A subjective questionnaire assesses the overall patient's satisfaction and the amount of photic phenomena for both IOL types.
Results:
100 eyes of 50 subjects were included in the study. 2 lenses had to be exchanged due to significant refractive surprise. Monocular uncorrected visual acuity at distance was 1.07 ± 0.11 in the dominant distance eye and 0.88 ± 0.13 in the non-dominant eye. Binocular uncorrected visual acuity at distance was 1.14 ± 0.09. Mean preferred binocular reading distance was 42cm and uncorrected binocular reading acuity at preferred reading distance was 1.10 ± 0.13.
Mean refraction was -0.11 ± 0.07 D in dominant eye and-0.55 ± 0.09 in the non-dominant eye.
Subjective optical side effects (haloes and glare) were reported in 28% of subjects, but none reported as serious. No subject wanted to exchange these lenses.
Conclusions:
Extended Range of Vision IOL`s (Symphony) were very well excepted by the study subjects with some, but only insignificant optical side effects.
Visual acuity at near, intermediate and at distance were excellent and the refractive precision was high. Although obeservation time is short, this new lens showed a high degree of patient satisfaction. Further studies are needed to define the long term efficacy and safety of this lens.
