Abstract Details

Purpose:

A new technology intraocular lens (IOL) has been developed using echelette and achromatic design features to provide patients an extended range of functional vision for far, intermediate and near distances. The aim of this study is to investigate the visual performance of the new TECNIS® Symƒony IOL under routine conditions.

Setting:

University Hospital - Brest France Multicenter study sites in Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Spain and UK.

Methods:

Forty-five study sites in Europe enrolled 467 patients for bilateral implantation of the TECNIS® Symƒony IOL. Follow-up examinations were scheduled at 4-8 weeks and 4-6 months after surgery. Uncorrected (UDVA) and best-corrected (CDVA) monocular and binocular vision, as well as uncorrected near (UNVA, 40 cm) and intermediate (UIVA, 70 cm) visual acuities were collected. Other study parameters include subjective refraction, decentration/tilt, photic phenomena, spectacle use (distance, intermediate, near), patient and surgeon satisfaction. Visual acuity values are presented in decimal values.

Results:

An interim analysis of 189 patients with or without intended micro-monovision was performed. Micro-monovision patients (n=51) reached a mean UDVA of 0.93 and CDVA of 1.07 at 4-8 weeks post-op. UIVA and UNVA were 0.85 and 0.76, respectively. Spectacle independence was high at all distances, with 94.1%, 91.3% and 84.8% of patients using glasses never or occasionally at far, intermediate and near, respectively. In patients without intended monovision (n=138), the mean UDVA was 0.95, CDVA 1.05, UIVA 0.76 and UNVA 0.60. Spectacles were never or occasionally used by 94.1%, 94.1% and 79.4% of patients for distance, intermediate and near, respectively.

Conclusions:

The TECNIS® Symƒony extended range of vision IOL provides good functional vision across all distances. Targeting for micro-monovision can further improve uncorrected near vision without compromising distance vision.
