Abstract Details
Purpose:
Recently Acid violet 17 (ala purpleĀ®) was approved as a novel dye for posterior segment intravital staining of the internal limiting membrane. It was the aim of this study to analyse complications of Acid violet 17 use.
Setting:
Augenzentrum Klinik Pallas, Olten, Switzerland
Methods:
Acid violet 17 was used in 53 eyes (53 patients, mean age 72.3+/-8.2 years) during vitreoretinal interventions. Main indications were: epiretinal fibroplasia (n=43), macular hole (n=5), and other diseases (n=4). 29 eyes (54.7 %) were pseudophakic or received simultaneous IOL-implantation.
Results:
12 of the 29 pseudophakic eyes (41 %) presented an intensive violet-red staining of the anterior and posterior intraocular lens surface. All stained lenses were hydrophilic. Lens staining was nor related to pre- or intraoperative posterior capsulotomies. 0 of 12 eyes with a transient intraoperative air filling at the end of surgery or postoperative gas or silicone endotomponade present an IOL-staining effect compared to 12 of 17 eyes (71 %) without an intra- or postoperative endotamponade. IOL-staining continuously decreased within the first postoperative weeks und had disappeared in all cases towards the end of the first postoperative month.
Conclusions:
Surgical use of Acid violet 17 may lead to an intensive staining effect of hydrophilic intraocular lenses. The coloration of the IOL surface spontaneously disappears within the first postoperative month. Transient (intraoperative) or postoperative endotamponde seems to avoid staining of IOLs.
