Abstract Details
Purpose:
In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of oxidative stress in progression of diabetic retinopathy through comparison of humor aqueous total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidant status levels (TOS) between patients with and without diabetes mellitus.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Selcuk University, Konya, Turkey
Methods:
In this prospective study, the participants were chosen from the diabetic and non-diabetic patients who were scheduled for cataract surgery (n:86) in our clinic. Group 1 (n:31) involved the patients without any systemic disorders except the diagnosis of cataract. In group 2 (n:19), group 3 (n:17) and group 4 (n:19) there were diabetic patients without diabetic retinopathy, non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy and proliferative diabetic retinopathy, respectively. Humor aqueous samples were collected before cataract surgery in the operating room. TAC and TOS levels are determined by the calorimetric method and compared in between groups.
Results:
In comparison of the humor aqueous levels four groups, TAC was seen as progressively decreased from control group (group 1) to the progressive diabetic retinopathy levels, and a statistically significant difference was found between control group (group 1) and diabetic retinopathy groups (group 3 and 4) in terms of TAC (p:0.042 and p:0.02, respectively). TOS levels were significantly lower in group 1 compared to all diabetic groups (groups 2, 3 and 4) (p lower than 0.05 in all). In diabetic groups, TAC and TOS levels were significantly inversely correlated (p lower than 0.001, Spearman correlation coefficient:-0.475).
Conclusions:
According to our study results, oxidative stress levels in humor aqueous were increased in diabetic patients independent from the presence of diabetic retinopathy. Total antioxidant levels were decreased in diabetic patients.
