Normative values of higher order aberrations of anterior and posterior cornea in caucasians using Scheimpflug imaging

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe the characteristics of higher-order aberrations (HOA) from anterior and posterior cornea and analyze their changes with age in equally sized cohorts. All age groups are evenly represented and strict exclusion criteria were met to ensure that the resulting correlation is reliable.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Goethe-University, Frankfurt, Germany.

Methods:

In this retrospective case study, HOA of 500 eyes of 500 Caucasian patients, measured using Pentacam HR (Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany), were analysed. Strict inclusion and exclusion criteria were followed to receive a set of normative values. The 3rd, 4th and 5th order aberrations from anterior and posterior cornea were scaled to a pupil size of 6 mm. The patients between the ages of 20 and 70 years were evenly divided into 5 groups with 100 patients each. Age-related changes in each order were studied from the front (CF) and the back of the cornea (CB).

Results:

Average root mean square (RMS) HOA from the front of the cornea was 0.43 µm and from the back was 0.19 µm. Average RMS of HOA in the first group for CF was 0.38±0.12 µm (CB 0.19±0.05 µm, total cornea 0.37±0.11 µm). In the age group of 60-70 these values changed to 0.51±0.16 µm for CF (CB: 0.19±0.06 µm, total: 0.54±0.19 µm). Coma increased with age for CF and decreased with age for CB. Primary spherical aberration increased with age for CF and gradually decreased for CB.

Conclusions:

RMS of higher order aberrations from the front of the cornea increases with age however there is minimal change in the RMS of HOA from the back of the cornea. Age specific changes in Coma and spherical aberrations were also observed.
