Abstract Details

Purpose:

Report the hydrophilic acrylic opacification of 18 IOLS (Lentis LS-502-1, Oculentis GmbH, Berlin, Germany) as well as their clinical and laboratory features.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal. Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal.

Methods:

Retrospective case-series including patients with postoperative IOL opacification submitted to explanation between November 2013 and December 2014. All explanted IOLs were of the same design and had been implanted in our department. Patients presented contrast and visual loss complaints. Medical records and the details of cataract surgery were reviewed. Explanted lenses were analysed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at the Ophthalmic Explants Biobank (RETICS: Prevención, detección precoz y tratamiento de la patología ocular prevalente, degenerativa y crónica”. Subprograma “dioptrio ocular y patologías frecuentes” (RD12/0034/0007) - VISSUM Alicante, Spain).

Results:

Eighteen opacified IOLs were explanted from 17 patients. The mean interval between cataract surgery and diagnosis of IOL opacification was 27.89±8.45 months (Range 6-40 months). Opacification had led to a statistically significant reduction of BCVA (mean 0.30±0.30, p less than 0.001) and occurred in 4.6% of the 390 Lentis LS-502-1 IOLs implanted in our department. Except for one case, all the lenses presented a similar pattern of opacification with a yellowish diffuse opacification uniformly distributed, with inorganic deposits and fibrin debris covering both surfaces of the optic and haptics confirmed by SEM. Different surgical techniques were used for IOL explantation which will be described.

Conclusions:

Opacification of Lentis LS-502-1 was found in a high number of patients with an important impact in their quality of vision, which leads to their explants. To our knowledge, this study represents the largest series in the literature describing cases of postoperative opacification of this IOL design.
