Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the anatomic position and relationship of the implantable collamer lenses (ICL) to adjacent ocular structures using ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM)
Setting:
The study was done in the Ophthalmology Department of Minia University Hospital between March 2010 and July 2014 in the form of a nonrandomized prospective clinical study
Methods:
142 eyes of myopic patients implanted with Visian ICL (model V4 STAAR Surgical AG, Nidau, Switzerland) were subjected to UBM study using paradigm TM UBM. Examination included axial and radial scanning in the four quadrants. The relative position of ICL to the adjacent structure and the overall iris configuration were noted. The machine calibers were used to measure the minimum central vaulting between the ICL and anterior lens capsule, the central distance between the corneal endothelium and the ICL, the angle opening distance at 500 um from the scleral spur (AOD 500) and the iridotrabecular angle (θ) in four quadrants.
Results:
In one eye the optic of the ICL was displaced anterior to the iris plane. In another eye one haptic and a part of the optic were displaced in the anterior chamber following trauma. The mean vaulting was 346µ ± 211 and the corneal endothelium - ICL distance was 251µ ± 66. The average AOD 500 was 301µ ± 67 and the average iridotrabecular angle (θ) was 26°±13. The overall iris configuration was flat in 89 eyes with minimal anterior convexity in at least one quadrant in 41 eyes and iris bombe in at least one quadrant in 12 eyes.
Conclusions:
UBM is a valuable tool for postoperative in vivo assessment of ICL
