Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the efficacy, safety and predictability of the Collamer epicristalinian lenses (Implantable Collamer Lenses, ICL) in a series of patients from 40 to 50 year old.
Setting:
Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega, Oviedo, Spain
Methods:
Study assembled a simple of 214 eyes from 135 patients implanted with an ICL (Staar Surgical AG, Nidau, Switzerland). The reason for the surgery was in all cases refractive. Mean age of patients was 42.4±2.5 years with a mínimum follow up of 12 months. All implanted lenses were for myopia, although the keratometric astigmatism of the simple was up to 4 diopters (D.) Uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA and DCVA), refraction, espherical equivalent (EE), and distance between the ICL and the lens (Vault) were analyzed. Incidence of cataract and percentage of Excimer enhancements were assessed too.
Results:
Mean sphere before the ICL implant was -9.18±3.80 D and after the ICL implant -0.46±0.74. Mean cylinder improved from -1.16±1.14 to -0.31±0.42. Mean DCVA improved from 0.82±0.20 to 0.90±0.17. The efficacy index was 0.86 and the safety index 1.13. None eye lost more than one line of DCVA. Regarding predictability 62% of eyes had an EE in the range of ±0.50 D and 81% in the range of ±1.00 D. Mean central Vault was 307±187 microns. 46 eyes (21.5%) had an Excimer enhancement and 3 eyes (1.4%) required cataract surgery. There were no cases of acute ocular hypertension.
Conclusions:
ICL implant in patients between 40 and 50 years can be considered a safe refractive procedure and with enough efficacy to correct myopia with or without astigmatism. Predictability was within expected, taking into account the slight hypocorrections programmed to improve near vision. The achieved central vault was satisfactory and the incidence of complications minimum.
