Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report the visual, refractive outcomes and surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) following intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation using Olsen formula in biaxial micro incision (1.3 mm) cataract surgery (B-MICS) with a new aspheric hydrophilic IOL
Setting:
University Hospital Ayr, Scotland, UK
Methods:
Prospective interventional case series. 60 eyes of 60 patients underwent B-MICS through a 1.3 mm clear corneal incision by a single surgeon. Data on optical biometry, keratometry, pre and post-operative unaided distance visual acuity (UDVA) and post operative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were collected. The Olsen formula was used to calculate IOL power. Post operative keratometry was performed in all cases at four weeks time gate. Commercially available software was used to calculate SIA.
Results:
There were no intra-operative or post-operative complications LogMAR mean post-operative UDVA and CDVA were 0.024 and - 0.027 respectively. Post operative median mean spherical equivalent (MSE) was plano. The median absolute difference between predicted and obtained MSE was 0.31 Dioptres (D). Mean numerical SIA was 0.23 D. Analysis of astigmatic vectors found no statistically significant difference between pre and post-operative keratometric values
Conclusions:
Bi-axial MICS using Olsen formula to calculate IOL power and the Incise IOL through a 1.3 mm clear corneal incision result in minimal surgically induced astigmatism and can facilitate good post-operative visual function with predictable refractive outcomes.
