Abstract Details
Purpose:
To ascertain if the keratometric readings (K1 &K2) and the mean keratometric power of the cornea (MK) show a significant difference between two IOL master readings taken at least one year apart, and the effect of the difference if any, on IOL power calculation.
Setting:
rince Charles Eye Unit, King Edward the V11 Hospital, Windsor, UK
Methods:
111 consecutive patients who had IOL master biometry in the un-operated eye twice, at least 1year apart were included in the study. The readings for K1, K2 and mean K from the 1st measurement was compared with the second measurement and the difference analyzed.
Results:
The difference between the mean for the two readings for K1 and K2 were 0.05 ±0.38D and 0.04±0.34D respectively. The difference in the MK between the two readings was 0.04±30D. The changes in the means were not statistically significant. However in 20% of cases the difference in the readings would have made a 0.25D change in the refractive outcome whilst is 5% of cases the difference was more than 0.50D.
Conclusions:
This study shows that there is temporal fluctuation in corneal curvature, and performing biometry nearer the time of surgery may give a more accurate outcome.
