Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the visual and refractive outcomes following intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation using Olsen and optimised Haigis formulas in biaxial micro incision (1.3 mm) cataract surgery (B-MICS) with a new aspheric hydrophilic IOL
Setting:
University Hospital Ayr, Scotland, United Kingdom
Methods:
Prospective interventional case series. 155 eyes of 155 patients underwent B-MICS with a new hydrophilic acrylic IOL injected through a 1.3 mm clear corneal wound by a single surgeon. Pre and post-operative unaided distance visual acuity (UDVA) and post operative corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were collected. The Olsen and optimised Haigis formulas were used to calculate IOL power of 60 and 95 eyes respectively
Results:
There were no intraoperative or post-operative complications. Mean post-operative UDVA and CDVA were 0.024 and - 0.027 LogMAR for Olsen and 0.037 and - 0.013 for optimised Haigis respectively. Post-operative median mean spherical equivalent (MSE) were plano and 0.125 Dioptres (D) for Olsen and optimised Haigis respectively. The median absolute error between the predicted and obtained MSE was 0.31 D and 0.29 D for Olsen and Haigis respectively. Of the Olsen cohort 64% were within 0.5 D, 81 % within 0.75 D, 90% within 1D, and 100% within 1.5 D of the expected MSE. Whereas the optimised Haigis cohort had 72% within 0.5 D of expected MSE, 84% within 0.75 D, 91% within 1 D and 100% within 1.5 D.
Conclusions:
The two fourth generation formulas; Haigis and Olsen IOL calculation formulas seem to provide good refractive outcomes following B –MICS. In this cohort there was no difference in the prediction error between the Olsen and the optimised Haigis formula
