Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the results provided by a new formula developed to manage unexpected refractive outcomes after cataract surgery and implantation of spherical and toric intraocular lenses.
Setting:
Research Institute and Private Practice, Perth Western, Australia
Methods:
The Barrett Rx formula is based on the Universal II and Barrett Toric Calculator and uses the calculated ELP and the refractive outcome to provide an IOL power for Lens exchange , piggy back IOL power, and the optimum angle to rotate an existing Toric IOL to minimise astigmatism. The predicted IOL power required to correct a -1.0 D refractive surprise was calculated with the Barrett Rx formula and compared to existing methods considering a range of different IOL powers in a theoretical eye with an axial length of 23 mm and Ks of 44 diopters.
Results:
The ratio of the required IOL power to correct a given refractive error was independent from the IOL power with existing methods but had a linear relationship with the new formula.
Conclusions:
The new formula developed for the analysis of refractive outcome could potentially improve the accuracy of managing unexpected outcomes after cataract surgery.
