Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare measurements of axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), keratometry (K), and the refractive predictability of the Aladdin and IOLMaster biometry devices in cataract surgery patients.
Setting:
Cataract clinic affiliated with the Goldschleger Eye Institute, Sheba Medical Center, Israel.
Methods:
A retrospective observational study of 206 eyes undergoing cataract surgery. Data were retrieved on AL, ACD, and K measurements obtained by 2 biometers: IOLMaster (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Berlin, Germany) and Aladdin (Topcon, Tokyo, Japan). Postoperative refractive prediction errors were calculated for each device and compared.
Results:
AL measurement was 24.14±1.74mm with Aladdin and 24.13±1.74mm with IOLMaster (p=0.288). K measurement was 43.83±1.53D with Aladdin and 43.94±1.57D with IOLMaster (p<0.001). There was an excellent correlation of AL and K measurements (r2=0.9994 and r2=0.9830, respectively) between the devices. Eighty six of 206 eyes underwent cataract surgery with a monodical intraocular lens, and the prediction of postoperative refraction showed a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.51±0.39D with IOLMaster and 0.56±0.40D with Aladdin (p=0.001). Following adjustment of Aladdin measurements for the systematic difference found in K measurement, the difference in MAE was no longer significant (p=0.526). ACD measurements did not differ significantly (p=0.277). ACD measurement success was significantly higher with the Aladdin (p<0.001).
Conclusions:
A very good correlation was found in AL, K and ACD measurements between the Aladdin biometer and the IOLMaster. Minimal adjustment of Aladdin K measurements matches the IOLMaster refractive predictability.
