Purpose:
To report clinical experience with combination of anterior chamber maintainer and automated active fluidics during cataract surgery.
Setting:
Ein-Tal Eye Center, Tel Aviv, Israel
Methods:
Phacoemulsification using the Centurion® Vision System's Active Fluidics™ (Alcon, USA) was done in combination with anterior chamber maintainer (ACM) either as separate systems or by connecting the Centurion's active fluidics directly to the ACM. Surgeries were done using coaxial sleeved phaco or by sleeveless technique through a side-port incision. Two types of ACM (20G [BVI] and 19G [AVI-ACM]) were used for sleeveless surgery
Results:
The combination of ACM and active fluidics provided an excellent stability of the anterior chamber throughout surgery during phacoemulsification and cortex aspiration and also when the phaco instrumentations were out of the eye (mainly in between surgical steps). Active fluid irrigation through the ACM provided the best combination of consistent, steady state predetermined pressure during the entire surgery from start to end.
Conclusions:
Combination of automated, computer controlled, active fluidics and continuous irrigation throughout surgery using ACM provides the most effective combination for a safe cataract surgery
