Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the amount of sequential CDE during the different phases of phacoemulsification in grade N II to IV cataracts.
Setting:
Single surgeon- study with Centurion Vision System ( Alcon Ltd).
Clinique General Beaulieu in Geneva
Methods:
This prospective, consecutive serie, involved 33 eyes, with cataract grade N II to IV, operated under local anaesthesia. The phacoemulsification was performed with a multiphase approach, starting with nucleus sculpture, followed by quadrant emulsification and finally epinucleus aspiration. During each phases of the procedure, the CDE was read on the Centurion screen consecutively and reported. The different phases of CDE were fractioned from the total recorded amount of CDE.
Results:
Detailed final results are reported and discussed. About 2/3rd of the CDE was spent during the initial phase , i.e. sculpture of the nucleus. The remaining 1/3rd of the CDE spent during step II, i.e. quadrant emulsification and aspiration. Only minimal amount of CDE was consumed during the third step, namely epinucleus removal.
Conclusions:
2/3rd of the CDE is spent during sculpture in the first phase of phacoemulsification. This suggests to develop efforts on protecting the cornea should focus on the very first phase of phacoemulsification, i.e. the sculpturing of the nucleus.
