Abstract Details
Purpose:
To review, improve and standardize current techniques of the measurement of the CDI of OVDs.
Setting:
Hyaltach Ltd. Laboratories, Livingston, Scotland and York Finch Eye Associates, Toronto, Canada.
Methods:
A standardized technique of CDI assessment was developed based upon the previously published methods. The CDI curves and pseudoplasticity curves of a number of OVDs from different companies and origin were measured and studied. Issues in the assessment of CDI were identified, and resolved.
Results:
When increasing numbers of points are generated for CDI curves under standard conditions, more accurate data than previously reported is generated. One issue of where to take the tangent to yield surgically analogous laboratory data becomes apparent and important, and will be discussed and illustrated, along with a solution to yield more useful CDI data for surgeons to review.
Conclusions:
The CDI is a very useful, but not a simple measurement, and data should be derived considering its application in eye surgery, in order to be most useful to surgeons who must choose a given OVD for a specific surgical application.
