Abstract Details

Purpose:

IOL s whether foldable,PMMA,acrylic, silicone hydrophobic or hydrophilic do not have their power or their name incorporated within them for a surgeon to see,once implanted into the eye. Relevant when papers/ records are misplaced or in case of medical tourism for patients having had their first eye operated abroad wishing surgery in India. In cases where there is a residual unwanted refractive error after the first operation and the second eye warrants emmetropia or the patient does not wish the identical IOL in the second operation knowledge of the brand and Dioptric power of the IOL is mandatory.

Setting:

Stand alone private practice,Kolkata India. Radiant Eye Foundation and Fortis Eye Clinic Kolkata I, West Bengal India. Idea based on retrospective general introspection of case studies over a 20 year period .

Methods:

The new design suggests how the selected power of the IOL is imprinted so as to be visible in the post op period on slit lamp examination to the surgeon after pupillary dilation . The paper also shows a new design for Toric markings on the IOL , useful in small pupil TORIC IOL surgery,increasing visibility during the final placement reducing uncertainties of inaccurate IOL positioning without needing pupil dilators.

Results:

Once implemented cross correlation of implanted IOL dioptric power with any refractive surprise,same or different brand of IOL may be implanted depending on patient satisfaction. More transparency in clinical practice especially in third world countries where mass scale surgery leads to cost cutting and duplication of US FDA and CE certified lenses.After pupil dilation a second surgeon can verify the IOL details almost like an ophthalmic blue print within the eye,the make,brand power.

Conclusions:

Imprinting IOLs with the manufacturing name,logo ,type and power will give an intra ocular blue print and authenticity and brand value. This will prevent duplication and false claims by other manufacturers and some ophthalmic healthcare professionals about the quality of IOl implanted!This will help duplicating the brand of IOL when asked for, Not duplicating the same IOL if the patient is unhappy. Malpractice regarding implanting of a lower quality IOL will decrease.The IOL ' power within' concept may help clinically correlate cases with refractive surprise preventing the same happening again. New TORIC markings will help in small pupil cases.
