Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the rotational stability, visual performance and patient satisfaction after implantation of the Torica-aA IOL (HumanOptics AG, Erlangen, Germany) in patients with age-related cataract.

Setting:

Konventhospital der Barmherzigen Brüder, Linz, Austria

Methods:

This prospective study enrolled 40 eyes of 26 patients (mean age: 72.8 ± 7.9 years) with pre-existing corneal astigmatism of 1.0 to 3.0 diopters (D). The rotational stability of the toric IOL was evaluated using retroillumination photographs taken within 24 hours after surgery and 1 week and 6 months postoperatively. Other main study outcomes were assessed 6 months postoperatively and included corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), subjective refraction, keratometry and patient satisfaction. The efficacy of the astigmatism correction was evaluated by vector analysis (J0, J45).

Results:

Six months postoperatively, mean absolute IOL rotation was 1.99 ± 1.88° (range 0.10 to 7.40°). IOL rotation was less than 3° and ≤ 5° in 85% and 94% of the eyes, respectively. Mean residual refractive cylinder was -0.57 ± 0.34 D. All eyes were within ± 0.60 D for J0 and J45. Mean CDVA improved significantly from 0.16 ± 0.16 LogMAR preoperatively to -0.02 ± 0.09 LogMAR postoperatively (p=0.0001). All eyes achieved 20/32 or better including 80% of eyes achieved 20/20 or better. All patients stated that they would choose the same lens model again. No postoperative complications were reported.

Conclusions:

Implantation of the Torica-aA IOL was safe and effective in reducing low to moderate pre-existing corneal astigmatism and provided good rotational stability and refractive outcomes which led to high levels of patient satisfaction.
