Abstract Details
Purpose:
This study explores the possibility of insertion of a new foldable multi component intraocular lens through incisions less than 1.8 mm.

Methods:
The InfiniteVision Optics® multi – component lens system (IVO, 'Precisight') allows surgeons to provide a customized adjustable refractive implant combining all degrees of sphere, cylinder and multifocality with a small inventory of parts. Since the two components are always used in each procedure, another feature of the system could be to divide their spherical power, thus minimizing the cross sectional diameter of the lens components, substantially reducing the incision size. This study on human eyebank eyes determined the minimum diameter of an incision required to place a 20D lens, actually two 10D lens components.
Results:
The multi component lens, by dividing its total dioptric power, allows the development of thinner lenses that can be injected through smaller incisions facilitating micro incision surgery. The use of this lens could decrease the incision size to approximately 1.3 mm (for example with bimanual cataract surgery or possibly with femtosecond laser cataract technology) thus offering minimal disturbance in the biomechanics of the cornea and astigmatism induction.
Conclusions:
A multi component lens, by dividing the dioptric spherical lens power can contribute to the benefits of microincisional cataract surgery.
