Purpose:
We have previously shown minimal incision stretch using a motorised IOL delivery system compared with a manual screw-based injector (Monarch III). The aim is to compare incision size after IOL implantation with a new disposable, single-handed-use, plunger-driven IOL delivery system with depth-guard nozzle tip design.
Setting:
The Cataract Treatment Centre at Sunderland Eye Infirmary, Sunderland, UK
Methods:
After routine phacoemulsification surgery through a 2.2mm incision, a hydrophobic acrylic IOL (AcrySof IQ) was injected using either the Monarch III injector with a ‘D' cartridge, or with the new disposable, single-handed-use, plunger-driven IOL delivery system using a cartridge with depth-guard nozzle tip design. Incision size was measured immediately before and immediately after IOL injection using a micro-incision gauge. Subjective assessment of ease of implantation was also recorded.
Results:
Using the Monarch III screw-based injection the incision enlarged by 0.1mm. With the new single-handed, plunger driven injection through the new cartridge design the incision enlargement was negligible. The new system was found to be very much easier to use by both scrub nurse assistant and by the surgeon.
Conclusions:
The new disposable, single-handed-use, plunger-driven IOL delivery system with depth-guard nozzle tip design was found to be very much easier to use than the existing cartridge and injector. Incision enlargement was found to be less and it is possible that this may enhance incision integrity/stability in the early post-operative period.
