Abstract Details
Purpose:
Conventional C-loop IOL's have two postoperative drawbacks : 1) a frequent partial optic capture in the capsulorhexis, due to the axis created by the optic-haptic junctions. 2) a large dispersion of the refractive errors.
We have designed haptics aiming to improve the IOL position.
Setting:
Cataract Clinic, Rue Bellaire 18 B, Neupré-Liège , Belgium.
Methods:
The new haptics present 4 cardinal C-loops, a maximal equatorial contact and a limited antero-posterior flexibility.
Postoperative photographs were used to assess optic capture and tilt.
Postoperative refraction in spherical equivalent was used to assess the dispersion of refractive errors.
A series of 60 of those implants was compared to a series of 60 conventional 2 C-loop implants.
Results:
Partial optic capture with tilt visible through Purkïnje reflections was seen in 37 % of the 2 C-loop IOL's. No tilt was seen in the cardinal 4 C-loop series.
The dispersion of refractive errors was 2.42 in the 2 C-loop series and 1.76 in the 4 C-loop series (p<0.04).
Conclusions:
In the capsular bag,IOL's with 4 C-loop junctions at the cardinal points prevent optic tilt and reduce variations in the effective lens position.
