Abstract Details
Purpose:
To show the performance of a new concept of auto-expandable intracapsular ring, made of a metallic alloy.
Setting:
Research Unit. University Hospital. Albacete. Spain
Methods:
The new intracapsular ring has been randomly implanted to one of the eyes of a White New Zealand Rabbit. The other eye has received a conventional PMMA ring, both after lens extraction. The rabbits have been followed for six months and their eyes enucleated after they were sacrified. Ease of use, position in the eye, tension and biocompatibility were compared between the two models studied.
Results:
There was no difference between the two ring models studied, in terms of capsular tension, position in the capsular bag and biocompatibility. The new intracapsular ring was easier to insert.
Conclusions:
The new model of intracapsular ring has shown reliability and biocompatibility comparable to the existing PMMA models and a significant ease of use.
