Abstract Details

Purpose:

Visual acuity evaluation of a new trifocal presbyopia correcting intraocular lens (IOL) and analysis of preferred patient intermediate distance measured with the Salzburg Reading Desk (SRD).

Setting:

University of Heidelberg, Department of Ophthalmology, Heidelberg, Germany

Methods:

In an ongoing, prospective, ethics committee approved clinical study 20 eyes of 10 patients undergoing cataract or refractive lens exchange surgery received the AcrySof PanOptix trifocal IOL bilaterally. Follow-up examinations include uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, CDVA), uncorrected and distance corrected near visual acuity (UNVA, DCNVA) at 40 cm and uncorrected and distance corrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA, DCIVA) at 60 cm. Additionally defocus curves were performed. A control cohort of pseudophakic patients with different presbyopia correcting IOLs (bifocal/trifocal) was evaluated regarding the preferred intermediate distance with the SRD monocularly and binocularly.

Results:

All surgeries were uneventful. Intended refraction was achieved with no significant remaining refraction. Median patient age was 59 years (range 51-69) and median IOL power 25.0 D (range 19.0-26.5 D). IOL calculation was performed with the Haigis formula aiming for a median intended postoperative refraction of -0.26D (range -0.43 to -0.04). Monocular visual acuity results 2-4 months postoperatively yielded a median UDVA of 0.19 logMAR and a median CDVA of 0.05 logMAR. Median UNVA at 40 cm was 0.04 and median UIVA at 60 cm 0.10 logMAR. The SRD examinations showed a preferred intermediate distance at 63.9 cm.

Conclusions:

The AcrySof PanOptix trifocal IOL showed precise IOL power outcomes. It provides good distance, intermediate and near visual acuity outcomes and the lens specific intermediate focus at 60 cm correlates very well with the preferred intermediate distance as chosen by pseudophakic patients.
