Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the feasibility of combining clear lens extraction and silicon oil removal in myopic patients after vitrectomy for retinal detachmen

Setting:

Twenty patients who suffered from Myopia, had rhegmotogenous retinal detachment, underwent pars plana vitrectomy, and came for silicone oil removal Assiut university hospital, Egypt

Methods:

Refractive lens exchange with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation was done at the time of silicon oil removal. The follow-up period ranged from 13 to 20 months.

Results:

Visual results were highly satisfactory especially for patients who were not wearing spectacles or contact lenses for their myopic error. The use of IOL master in biometry made the intraocular lens calculation more accurate and reliable. We did not observe any case of retinal detachment during the follow-up period.

Conclusions:

Clear lens extraction combined with silicon oil removal after retinal detachment repair is an efficient and safe method for myopia correction. The accuracy of post-operative refraction indicated the reliability of the IOL master in IOL calculation in silicon filled eyes. The risk of retinal re-detachment was not increased. However, the number of eyes was small and the follow-up period was short, to justify a definite conclusion. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
