Evaluation of magnitude and axis of anterior and posterior surface corneal astigmatism with the use of a Scheimpflug camera

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the magnitude and axis of corneal anterior and posterior surface topographic astigmatism and to identify possible association among them, with the use of a Scheimpflug camera

Setting:

“Eye Day Clinic”, Athens, Greece

Methods:

The corneal topographic astigmatism of 104 eyes, without any previous corneal surgery or other corneal pathology, was measured with Scheimpflug imaging (Wavelight Oculyzer II, Alcon). In all cases, a complete corneal analysis was performed and data of anterior and posterior surface astigmatism were obtained at the same time. Descriptive analysis, Spearman correlation and scatter plots were used as appropriate

Results:

Mean values of anterior and posterior surface astigmatism were -1.0D (± 0.73) and 0.3D (± 0.16) respectively. Anterior surface astigmatism was significantly correlated with posterior surface astigmatism (r=-0.7; p = 0.001). The axis of anterior astigmatism was significantly correlated with axis of posterior astigmatism (r=0.35; p=0.001). Discrepancy between anterior and posterior axis was significantly correlated with lower magnitude of anterior surface astigmatism (p=0.001)

Conclusions:

The magnitude of anterior surface astigmatism adequately predicts the magnitude of posterior surface astigmatism. Axis discrepancy among anterior and posterior astigmatism was more frequently observed in low magnitude astigmatism of anterior surface.
