Evaluation of intereye topographic astigmatism and axis enantiomorphism of anterior and posterior corneal surface, with the use of a Scheimpflug camera

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the intereye astigmatism correlation, with regards to the magnitude and axis of corneal anterior and posterior surface topographic astigmatism, with the use of a Scheimpflug camera

Setting:

“Eye Day Clinic”, Athens, Greece

Methods:

We evaluated the corneal topographic astigmatism of both eyes of 52 individuals, with no previous corneal pathology, with the use of a Scheimpflug imaging camera (Wavelight Oculyzer II, Alcon). In all cases data of anterior and posterior surface astigmatism were obtained for both eyes. Descriptive analysis, Spearman correlation and scatter plots were used as indicated

Results:

Mean values of anterior surface astigmatism were -1.006D (±0.76) and -1.01D (±0.72) for right and left eye respectively. Intereye anterior astigmatisms were significantly correlated (r=0.76; p=0.001). Mean values of posterior surface astigmatism were 0.319D (±0.156) and 0.292D (±0.166) for right and left eye respectively. Intereye posterior astigmatisms were significantly correlated (r=0.66; p=0.001). With regards to perfect enantiomorphism, the mean value of axis discrepancy between the two eyes was 14.34 degrees (±16.3) and 9.29 degrees (±11.7) for anterior and posterior surfaces respectively. Anterior surface axis discrepancy was significantly correlated with the magnitude of respective astigmatism

Conclusions:

In healthy corneas, intereye topographic astigmatism demonstrates significant correlation for both anterior and posterior surfaces. Regarding axis enantiomorphism, the degree of discrepancy is low. Furthermore axis discrepancy increases with lower magnitude astigmatism FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
