Anterior segment measurements in oral fluoroquinolone users

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Topical ofloxacin and lomefloxacin were previously reported to accumulate in crystalline lens. Ocular bioavailability of ciprofloxacin in aqueous humour following oral and topical administration was found to be similar. The current study aimed to evaluate possible alterations of anterior segment parameters after use of oral fluoroquinolone.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Marmara University Medical School, Istanbul, Turkey

Methods:

Twenty-one patients (13 female; age range 27-76 years) treated with oral 400mg moxifloxacin or 500mg ciprofloxacin for 14 days for various systemic infectious diseases were included in this prospective study. The anterior segment parameters included lens thickness, anterior chamber depth and central corneal thickness. Biometric measurements were obtained with the optical low-coherence reflectometry (Lenstar LS900, Haag-Streit AG) at baseline and the first week as well as the first month after the treatment.

Results:

The mean baseline lens thickness (4.22mm), anterior chamber depth (3.24mm) and central corneal thickness values (525μm) did not change neither at the first week (P=0.1, P=0.6, and P=0.9, respectively) nor at the first month (P=0.2, P=0.4 and P=0.5, respectively) after use of drug.

Conclusions:

Oral fluoroquinolone use did not associate with any biometric alterations in lens thickness, anterior chamber depth and central corneal thickness. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
