Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess safety and efficacy of a novel modification of classic canaloplasty - method ab interno.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department of Military Institute of Medicine in Warsaw, Poland

Methods:

ABIC is a method,in which using a standard canaloplasty set a Schlemms Canal is opened at the site of anterior chamber and a catheter is inserted into canal. The beacon tip shows the catheter position in the canal which is observed in gonioscopic view.A HealonGV is injected while withdrawing the catheter. It is a prospective study of four patients operated in Military Institute of Medicine in Warsaw,Poland. The indication was uncontrolled POAG and cataract.Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA),intraocular pressure (IOP),anterior and posterior segments, number of medications were examined.Follow-up examinations were done on days 1 and 7,and at 1, 3, 6 and 12months.

Results:

All patients were successfully catheterized. Preoperatively mean IOP was 17,25 ±0,5 mmHg and 360 days postoperatively 15,5±1,7mmHg. The number of antiglaucoma medications was preoperatively 1,5±1,57 and it decreased to 0,25±0,5 per patient. Before the surgery mean visual acuity(VA) was 0,11±0,05logMAR and after a year it was 0,1±0,09 logMAR. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed.

Conclusions:

Canaloplasty ab intero is a novel method in glaucoma surgery. The preliminary results show medium efficacy and high safety profile. However the analysed cohort was very small. Prospective studies on larger groups of patients should be conducted to confirm the observations. FINANCIAL DISCLOUSRE: NONE
